Plagiarism Lines Blur for Students in Digital Age

At DePaul University, the tip-off to one student’s copying was the purple shade of several paragraphs he had lifted from the Web; when confronted by a writing tutor his professor had sent him to, he was not defensive — he just wanted to know how to change purple text to black.

And at the University of Maryland, a student reprimanded for copying from Wikipedia in a paper on the Great Depression said he thought its entries — unsigned and collectively written — did not need to be credited since they counted, essentially, as common knowledge.

Professors used to deal with plagiarism by admonishing students to give credit to others and to follow the style guide for citations, and pretty much left it at that.

But these cases — typical ones, according to writing tutors and officials responsible for discipline at the three schools who described the plagiarism — suggest that many students simply do not grasp that using words they did not write is a serious misdeed.

It is a disconnect that is growing in the Internet age as concepts of intellectual property, copyright and originality are under assault in the unbridled exchange of online information, say educators who study plagiarism.

Digital technology makes copying and pasting easy, of course. But that is the least of it. The Internet may also be redefining how students — who came of age with music file-sharing, Wikipedia and Web-linking — understand the concept of authorship and the singularity of any text or image.

“Now we have a whole generation of students who’ve grown up with information that just seems to be hanging out there in cyberspace and doesn’t seem to have an author,” said Teresa Fishman, director of the Center for Academic Integrity at Clemson University. “It’s possible to believe this information is just out there for anyone to take.”

Professors who have studied plagiarism do not try to excuse it — many are champions of academic honesty on their campuses — but rather try to understand why it is so widespread.

In surveys from 2006 to 2010 by Donald L. McCabe, a co-founder of the Center for Academic Integrity and a business professor at Rutgers University, about 40 percent of 14,000 undergraduates admitted to copying a few sentences in written assignments.

Perhaps more significant, the number who believed that copying from the Web constitutes “serious cheating” is declining — to 29 percent on average in recent surveys from 34 percent earlier in the decade.

Sarah Brookover, a senior at the Rutgers campus in Camden, N.J., said many of her classmates blithely cut and paste without attribution.

“This generation has always existed in a world where media and intellectual property don’t have the same gravity,” said Ms. Brookover, who at 31 is older than most undergraduates. “When you’re sitting at your computer, it’s the same machine you’ve downloaded music with, possibly illegally, the same machine you streamed videos for free that showed on HBO last night.”

Ms. Brookover, who works at the campus library, has pondered the differences between researching in the stacks and online. “Because you’re not walking into a library, you’re not physically holding the article, which takes you closer to ‘this doesn’t belong to me,’ ” she said. Online, “everything can belong to you really easily.”

A University of Notre Dame anthropologist, Susan D. Blum, disturbed by the high rates of reported plagiarism, set out to understand how students view authorship and the written word, or “texts” in Ms. Blum’s academic language.

She conducted her ethnographic research among 234 Notre Dame undergraduates. “Today’s students stand at the crossroads of a new way of conceiving texts and the people who create them and who quote them,” she wrote last year in the book “My Word!: Plagiarism and College Culture,” published by Cornell University Press.

Ms. Blum argued that student writing exhibits some of the same qualities of pastiche that drive other creative endeavors today — TV shows that constantly reference other shows or rap music that samples from earlier songs.

In an interview, she said the idea of an author whose singular effort creates an original work is rooted in Enlightenment ideas of the individual. It is buttressed by the Western concept of intellectual property rights as secured by copyright law. But both traditions are being challenged.

“Our notion of authorship and originality was born, it flourished, and it may be waning,” Ms. Blum said.

She contends that undergraduates are less interested in cultivating a unique and authentic identity — as their 1960s counterparts were — than in trying on many different personas, which the Web enables with social networking.

“If you are not so worried about presenting yourself as absolutely unique, then it’s O.K. if you say other people’s words, it’s O.K. if you say things you don’t believe, it’s O.K. if you write papers you couldn’t care less about because they accomplish the task, which is turning something in and getting a grade,” Ms. Blum said, voicing student attitudes. “And it’s O.K. if you put words out there without getting any credit.”

The notion that there might be a new model young person, who freely borrows from the vortex of information to mash up a new creative work, fueled a brief brouhaha earlier this year with Helene Hegemann, a German teenager whose best-selling novel about Berlin club life turned out to include passages lifted from others.

Even before Apple announced the iPad, higher-education technologists predicted that e-book readers were on the brink of becoming a common accessory among college students; last fall, two-thirds of campus CIOs said they believed e-readers would become an “important platform for instructional resources” within five years, according to the Campus Computing Project.

Now, as several major universities finish analyzing data from pilot programs involving the latest version of the Amazon Kindle, officials are learning more about what students want out of their e-reader tablets. Generally, the colleges found that students missed some of the old-fashioned note-taking tools they enjoyed before. But they also noted that the shift had some key environmental benefits. Further, a minority of students embraced the Kindle fairly quickly as highly desirable for curricular use.

If one clear consensus emerged from the studies that have been finalized at Princeton University, Case Western Reserve University and the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business, it is this: For students who were given the Kindle DX and tried to use it for coursework, the inability to easily highlight text was the biggest lowlight of the experience.

“Because it was difficult to take notes on the Kindle, because PDF documents could not be annotated or highlighted at all, and because it was hard to look at more than one document at once, the Kindle was occasionally a tool that was counter-productive to scholarship,” Princeton researchers wrote in a summary of their study, released Monday.

“Many users thought that the addition of a touch screen and stylus would make for a much better device,” they wrote, noting that while the Kindle does allow students to digitally underline text, students did not like having to type corresponding margin notes on the device’s keypad.

The students also wanted it to be easier to navigate among annotated pages, and wished there was some way to impose a coding system for annotations, similar to how some students use differently colored highlighters to organize their annotations in bound books.

Indeed, highlighting and note-taking went hand in hand with another feature students on multiple campuses considered important: navigation. Students did not like being unable to have multiple texts open at the same time.

“When using books as sources to write papers, navigation is extremely important,” wrote one Princeton student. “I usually take a lot of notes on the books/articles that I am planning to cite. And when writing, I just go back and forth.”

Students whose curriculum requires them to organize information culled from many different sources are particularly concerned with being able to navigate multiple documents at once, said Michael Koenig, director of operations at Virginia’s Darden School of Business, which also ran a Kindle DX pilot program last fall. Students at Darden typically have to keep track of 125 different business cases in their first quarter alone, Koenig said, and the Kindle was not always up to the task.

“At the point where you need to highlight and notate in a fairly high-paced classroom — to be able to move back and forth between business cases, class readings, your own notations, your own highlights, your own analysis — It’s just not as flexible or nimble as having your paper notes or your laptop right there,” he said, adding that the Kindle was “not quite ready for prime time.”

Students at Case Western, in addition to grumbling about “implementation of underlining, annotation, and bookmarking,” found it disorienting that the Kindle did not mark texts by page numbers in the same way as their bound counterparts, which made it difficult for them to follow along in class when professors kept instructing students to turn to a particular page. Their most frequent complaint, according to a summary provided to Inside Higher Ed, was that they could not “flip” randomly through pages of a text — echoing the comments of some Princeton students who missed the ability to easily “skim” texts.

Of course, there were students on each campus who took to the Kindle more strongly than others. Lev Gonick, the chief information officer at Case Western Reserve, referred to these more enthusiastic adopters as “power users,” and said they actually liked the annotation tools on the Kindle DX. Likewise, Koenig said some Darden students were savvy enough to successfully juggle the trappings of business school on their e-readers. “We had some of our tech-aggressive M.B.A.’s use it in the classroom successfully, and some even liked it for technical classes,” he said.

But those students only comprised the top 15 percent or so of the Darden sample; most students fell in the next tier of users, who were not quite as comfortable navigating the device. That is to say, even if the device was “ready for prime time” after all, the vast majority of students were not keen to use it.

Koenig did note that the very aspect of the Kindle that at times made it inferior to a series of texts spread out on a desk proved advantageous in other contexts — such as traveling. While keeping track of hundreds of texts, he explained, business students do a lot of traveling for internship and job interviews. Thus, being able to fit the equivalent of reams upon reams of study materials on a 10-ounce gadget is a boon for the scholar-on-the-go. “If I’m taking off Wednesday for Thursday and Friday interviews, I don’t need to go through four class binders on the plane in order to not fall behind,” he said.

The Princeton researchers also pointed out the green angle: Students who used the Kindle for academic purposes printed out half as many assignments as those who didn’t.

But generally, students were more apt to use their Kindles for recreational reading — for which they don’t have to worry about annotation — while sticking to dead-tree texts for schoolwork. Whereas 75 percent of Darden students said they would not recommend the Kindle for other aspiring M.B.A.’s, about 90 percent said they would recommend it to family and friends for casual reading. “So they’re confirming for Amazon what Amazon already knew,” Koenig said, “which is that they’ve created a very good consumer product.” Scholarly aid, not so much.

Gonick, of Case Western Reserve, remained optimistic about the prospects of the e-reader in higher education.

“Asking real students about their experiences with a first generation e-reader reminds me of my first Kaypro in 1983. I could imagine its transformational capabilities, I just couldn't experience it myself in the first generation product,” Gonick wrote in an e-mail.

“Next generation smartpads [sic], including the iPad and the Edge from Entourage, are true multi-functional devices that to varying degrees carry forward the strengths of the Kindle DX while adding additional features,” he said. “I believe higher education represents an important market for smartpad manufacturers because of our demographic, market size, and trend setting nature of our service lines. Stay tuned, the fun has just begun.”

How College Students Seek Information in the Digital Age | EDUCAUSE


A report of findings from 2,318 respondents to a survey carried out among college students on six campuses distributed across the U.S. in the spring of 2009, as part of Project Information Literacy. Respondents, while curious in the beginning stages of research, employed a consistent and predictable research strategy for finding information, whether they were conducting course-related or everyday life research. Almost all of the respondents turned to the same set of tried and true information resources in the initial stages of research, regardless of their information goals. Almost all students used ourse readings and Google first for course-related research and Google and Wikipedia for everyday life research. Most students used library resources, especially scholarly databases for course-related research and far fewer, in comparison, used library services that required interacting with librarians. The findings suggest that students conceptualize research, especially tasks associated with seeking information, as a competency learned by rote, rather than as an opportunity to earn, develop, or expand upon an information-gathering strategy which leverages the wide range of resources available to them in the digital age.

Niet echt een onderwerp voor informatiespecialisten, maar wel interessant. Hoewel we nu te kampen hebben met bezuinigingen en vergrijzing in ons vakgebied zal in de toekomst (over 10 jaar) een personeelstekort ontstaan. Hieronder enkele oplossingen van de KB:

- Jonge mensen aantrekken voor bijvoorbeeld digitalisering en e-depot. Deze mensen bleven tot voor kort vaak voor de duur van een project en waren daarna weer weg. Nu werkt de KB met trainees voor jonge mensen in projecten en voor aankomende managers. Ze werken samen met andere Europese instellingen om uitwisselingen te organiseren
- Het scholingsbudget is verdubbeld.
- Er is een onderzoek gedaan naar de bestaande groep werknemers. Die was niet alleen oud, maar bleven bovendien ook erg lang in dezelfde functie. Veel medewerkers beschouwen de chef verantwoordelijk voor hun loopbaan in plaats van zichzelf. Poging om deze groep te mobiliseren. (Bijvoorbeeld door: Hulp bij het opstarten van een eigen bedrijf en scholing)

Deze lezing raakt ‘mijn’ aandachtsgebied: nieuwe ontwikkelingen op internetgebied, maar zeker ook het aandachtsgebied ‘onderzoek’

Guus van den Brekel beschreef een aantal problemen:
- de gebruiker denkt zelf alles te kunnen vinden en heeft de bibliotheek niet nodig
- de bibliotheek is daardoor onzichtbaar
- Maar: voor fatsoenlijk hoger onderwijs kun je je niet beperken tot één of twee bronnen
- Veel bronnen zijn onbekend

Wat zoeken onderzoekers?
- Tools om workflow te optimaliseren
- Mogelijkheid tot communicatie, delen van informatie, samenwerking
- Erkenning voor resultaat van onderzoek

Naast algemene social software: weblogs, wiki’s, Google docs, Twitter en virtuele werelden zijn er allerlei tools al beschikbaar. Van den Brekel laat nu duizelingwekkende hoeveelheid tools en voorbeelden voor samenwerking, communicatie en diensten-op-maat zien. Ik heb de websites erbij gezocht en in de lijst hieronder geplaatst. Leuk en leerzaam om door te snuffelen.

Hij besluit met de opmerking dat wij moeten weten wat de onderzoekers, lectoren in ons geval, nodig hebben. In gesprek blijven dus. En wij moeten op de hoogte zijn van deze mogelijkheden om op eventuele vragen in te kunnen springen. De bibliotheek moet zichtbaar, vindbaar en toegankelijk zijn.

E-Books for Academe: A Study from Gettysburg College | EDUCAUSE

This ECAR research bulletin analyzes the potential impact of electronic books (e-books) on higher education. It draws evidence from a series of small qualitative studies and focus groups with faculty and students undertaken at Gettysburg College between the fall of 2008 and the summer of 2009. These studies cover a representative selection of currently available e-book formats: the Kindle, the e-Reader, the iPhone, the netbook, and coursesmart.com.

The Questions We asked:

  1. How many eBooks have you read this year?
  2. What is the primary device on which you read electronic books?
  3. What would you feel comfortable spending for a single eBook ($US)?

We recorded 217 people having completed this survey. Let's look at the results..

How many ebooks have you finished reading this year?

The largest response to the first question indicates 38% of the respondents have not finished reading an eBook this year, including people who don't read electronic texts, or people who just have not finished one. Looking then at the people who have read an eBook this year, a quarter of our survey participants have read between two and five titles this year. And while it is a small percentage (11%), it is interesting to note the numbers that have read more than 10 eBooks.

We might expect for this numbers to change next year if we run the survey again; these devices are likely to be popular holiday gifts.

For the devices, people use to read eBooks, most readers (37%) in our survey use their computer:

What is the primary device you use to read electronic books?

The Amazon kindle has the next highest usage (25%) which is higher if you consider the 14% who use a Kindle on a mobile device. Between the Kindle and Stanza, and a few mentioned under "other", mobile eReader devices are used by a quarter of our survey participants. In the "other" responses were:

  • None/not applicable (13)... "eBooks are brain-dead as currently constituted" "I don't read electronic books! Scandalous, isn't it?"
  • Other iPhone app (4) BeamItDown, playshakespeare.com, Eucalyptus, Classics for iPhone
  • too expensive (2)
  • I read books in print / I hate to read online (2)
  • All of the above
  • B&N eReader
  • PDA

Probably the most interesting responses were in the third question where we tried to gauge where people feel eBooks should be priced:

What is the most you would spend in a single eBook ($US)?

The majority of respondents (60%) expect eBooks to be priced well below the price of a paperback book or even lower amounts. In fact, less than 10% feel that an eBook price should be in the price range of a print version.
