E-Books for Academe: A Study from Gettysburg College | EDUCAUSE

This ECAR research bulletin analyzes the potential impact of electronic books (e-books) on higher education. It draws evidence from a series of small qualitative studies and focus groups with faculty and students undertaken at Gettysburg College between the fall of 2008 and the summer of 2009. These studies cover a representative selection of currently available e-book formats: the Kindle, the e-Reader, the iPhone, the netbook, and coursesmart.com.

Results of NMC Two Minute Survey on eBooks

Last week we launched an NMC Two Minute Survey on eBook reading activity and preferences for reading digital texts. (image credit: Flickr CC Licensed Photo by antonio.tombolino)

The Questions We asked:

1. How many eBooks have you read this year?
2. What is the primary device on which you read electronic books?
3. What would you feel comfortable spending for a single eBook ($US)?

We recorded 217 people having completed this survey. Let's look at the results..

The largest response to the first question indicates 38% of the respondents have not finished reading an eBook this year, including people who don't read electronic texts, or people who just have not finished one. Looking then at the people who have read an eBook this year, a quarter of our survey participants have read between two and five titles this year. And while it is a small percentage (11%), it is interesting to note the numbers that have read more than 10 eBooks.

We might expect for this numbers to change next year if we run the survey again; these devices are likely to be popular holiday gifts.

For the devices, people use to read eBooks, most readers (37%) in our survey use their computer:

The Amazon kindle has the next highest usage (25%) which is higher if you consider the 14% who use a Kindle on a mobile device. Between the Kindle and Stanza, and a few mentioned under "other", mobile eReader devices are used by a quarter of our survey participants. In the "other" responses were:

• None/not applicable (13)... "eBooks are brain-dead as currently constituted" "I don't read electronic books! Scandalous, isn't it?"
• Other iPhone app (4) BeamItDown, playshakespeare.com, Eucalyptus, Classics for iPhone
• too expensive (2)
• I read books in print / I hate to read online (2)
• All of the above
• B&N eReader
• PDA
• Waiting

Probably the most interesting responses were in the third question where we tried to gauge where people feel eBooks should be priced:

The majority of respondents (60%) expect eBooks to be priced well below the price of a paperback book or even lower amounts. In fact, less than 10% feel that an eBook price should be in the price range of a print version.

The Open University Library: Barack Obama proclaims October 2009 as National Information Literacy Awareness Month

A recent release from The White House stating the importance of Information Literacy (IL)skills got a lot of people talking at the end of last week as October was declared National Information Literacy Awareness Month in the United States.

In it therelease states:

"Every day, we are inundated with vast amounts of information. A 24-hour news cycle and thousands of global television and radio networks, coupled with an immense array of online resources, have challenged our long-held perceptions of information management. Rather than merely possessing data, we must also learn the skills necessary to acquire, collate, and evaluate information for any situation."

Toulouse Liber Conferentie

Vandaag de derde dag Liber Conference. Tijdens deze Conferentie vinden geen parallelsessies plaats, behalve op de eerste dag een drietal Masterclassen, waar je uit kon kiezen. Verder zijn de hele conferentie in deze collegezaal ( zie afbeelding) presentaties gehouden. We hebben herhaalde malen geconcludeerd dat zowel wijzelf als onze studenten verwend zijn binnen Avans. Bij deze oude, niet gerenoveerde universiteit is geen airconditioning aanwezig en zijn er in de hele collegezaal geen stopcontacten te vinden voor je laptop.
De organisatie van Liber staat echter duidelijk open voor feedback, want vandaag werden de aanbevelingen van 8 groepen gepresenteerd tav de organisatie tav diverse aspecten. Zo kwamen er aanbevelingen voor een betere communicatie (eventueel via een Wiki), aanbeveling om alle presentaties in het engels te laten houden ( met eventuele engels training voor niet native speakers) en een aanbeveling voor parallelssessies. Prima initiatief!

De presentaties van de Nederlanders waren erg goed, zonder dit uit chauvinisme te zeggen. De presentatie van Guus van den Brekel, werkzaam als informatiespecialist aan de medische faculteit van de Universiteit van Groningen sprak erg aan. Ook bij hem speelt het probleem om de wetenschappers ervan te overtuigen dat er meer bronnen zijn dat dan Pubmed en Google Scholar. Ook voor hen komt web 2.0 eraan en is het volgens hem niet de vraag óf het gebeurt, maar hoe snel. Zie voor zijn presentatie de bijgevoegde site.

De presentaties die door de Fransen, meestal in het Frans, gegeven werden, kenmerkten zich met name door slides vol tekst en het voorlezen van hun presentatie. De presentaties werden simultaan vertaald in het engels, wat wel weer een bijzondere ervaring was!

Picarta vs Worldcat vs Google

Bij het bespreken van de budgetten en de databanken bij de informatiespecialisten kwam de vraag naar voren of we wel 4 kanalen van Picarta moeten hebben, omdat je natuurlijk ook kunt zoeken in Worldcat.

Moeten we in onze trainingen Worldcat ook meenemen? Of is misschien alleen Google al voldoende? Wij nemen Picarta mee in onze trainingen voornamelijk vanwege de mogelijkheid tot het zoeken op tijdschriftartikelen.

In een poging om deze vragen te beantwoorden heb ik een kleine test (zie hieronder) uitgevoerd. Even niet teveel gelet op de interface, maar op de inhoud. Uiteraard ook wel gekeken naar gebruiksvriendelijkheid.

Bij Picarta heb ik bij vormgeving: ‘worldcat’ aangeklikt. Ik was nieuwsgierig naar de verschillen in resultaten met name van tijdschriftartikelen.

Conclusies:

In picarta toch nog wel de meeste verwijzingen gevonden. Vreemd genoeg is de verwijzing onder ‘beschikbaarheid’ niet altijd compleet voor wat betreft de locaties van Avans.

Bij Worldcat is mij nog niet helemaal duidelijk wat er nu wel en niet is opgenomen. Er zit wel al heel veel in en het aantal beschrijvingen groeit gestaag, dus dit onderzoekje zal al snel achterhaald zijn.

Het loont om het artikel ook even in Google op te zoeken, want dan maak je kans op de full text versie. Ik las in de blog van Wouter Gerritsma (WoW! Wouter over het Web) dat de Universiteit van Wageningen hun bezit (catalogus en databanken) zoveel mogelijk door Google laat indexeren/ in Google zet dus. Blijkbaar kan dat. De moeite van het onderzoeken waard!

Voor wat betreft het aantal kanalen is het lastig een conclusie te trekken. Tijdens mijn zoektocht waren op één moment alle kanalen bezet. Maar misschien had ik er per ongeluk zelf wel enkele openstaan. We moeten in elk geval één kanaal houden omdat niet alle informatie elders te vinden is, en vanwege de SDI service. Ik verwacht dat SDI snel achterhaald zal worden door RSS, wat overigens ook al mogelijk is in Picarta en in beperkte mate (RSS op ‘lijsten’) in Worldcat. Eén kanaal zou erg weinig kunnen zijn wanneer één collega er langere tijd mee bezig is. Misschien langzaam afbouwen, en goed in de gaten houden wat er in Worldcat gebeurt.

Voor wat betreft de trainingen twijfel ik of ik Picarta nog aan de orde stel. Juist het gebruik met kanalen maakt het niet handig bij de trainingen. Opdrachten uit laten voeren werkt niet hebben we gemerkt. Daarbij grijpen onze studenten niet erg vaak naar tijdschriftartikelen.

Jeroen Tegelaar stelt vast dat digitaliseringstrajecten vaak mislukken, ondanks de betrokken informatieprofessionals. Te hoge verwachtingen worden niet tegengesproken. Wie faalt waar en hoe komt dat? Informatie Professional. 13 (1), 14.
- Picarta: beschrijving gevonden. Bij klikken op ‘beschikbaarheid’ staat Avans er niet bij
- Worldcat: beschrijving gevonden Avans Hoge School. Als je daarop klikt kom je automatisch in de catalogus waar je het niet in zult vinden als je niet op tijdschrifttitel zoekt. (je kunt een vraag sturen naar Question Point)
- Google: hele artikel gevonden

Test 3: Wat meer specifiek voor mijn academie:
De uitdaging : Financiële rapportage weer op de rails bij NedTrain - Als financieel interimmer kom je vaak niet in een gespreid bedje terecht. Dat ondervond ook Arjen Luijendijk die de financiële rapportage bij NedTrain weer op poten moest zetten nadat de vorming van een shared service center niet helemaal vlekkeloos was verlopen. 'Let op dat je bij veranderingstrajecten zaken ook structureel borgt.' (2008). -In: Tijdschrift controlling : officieel orgaan van het NGA Vereniging van Financieel-Administratieve Managers, vol. 23 (2008), afl. 4, pag. 44-47 (4)

Internet en mp3 maakten de cd als geluidsdrager overbodig, en peer-to-peer file sharing-netwerken als Kazaa en Gnutella bezorgden de platenzaak als tussenhandel een enorme knauw. The Future of the Library

Epochal changes in the creation and delivery of information and in communication challenge everything we know about teaching, learning, and scholarship. To the academy of tomorrow, the traditional role of library and technology organizations has little value. To continue to be relevant and helpful to our universities missions, library and technology leaders must understand the changes taking place in the world around them, chart new strategic directions, retool their organizations to meet these new challenges, and lead their staff and communities in defining what teaching, learning, and scholarship are and will become.

The presenters will lead attendees in an interactive review of the fluid landscape of the changing world of libraries, IT, and higher education. We will collectively identify the challenges we face, propose solutions, and chart strategic directions, drawing in particular on our experiences with leading successful merged information service organizations.
